7. Robert and Elizabeth Browning - World's Famous Love Story

Love story of Robert and Elizabeth Browning has all the ingredients of love, romance, admiration, courtship and an elopement of a lifetime. Elizabeth had an inclination towards poetry and used to write poetry since childhood. She published her collection of poems in 1846.

Robert Browning an audacious young man who excelled in playwright and today regarded as one of the best English Poet fell deeply in love with Elizabeth. His relationship with beautiful Elizabeth stated with admiration of her poetry. Her work immensely impressed Browning who at that time was a leading Romantic Poet. They were of same intellectual level and had a mutual admiration for each other's work. He wrote letters to her from praising her books to falling in with the enchanting poetess. He later met her, who lived with her father. Their romance gradually developed and they became very close. In 1846 they tied the knot secretly, as her tyrannical Father disapproved of their alliance.

Right after their marriage they moved to Italy and stayed in Pisa and Florence which they nicknamed Casa Guidi (now a museum to their memory). They had only one child, Robert Wiedemann Barrett Browning. Their literary careers burgeoned in Italy and they were fascinated by this place and Robert Browning famously called it 'Italy was my university'.
